Mourning began his professional basketball career in 1993 with the Charlotte Hornets where he played center position until 1995. In 1995 he joined Miami Heat and played with that team until 2002. In 2003 Mourning played one season with the New Jersey Nets, returning to the Miami Heat in 2005. Mourning announced his NBA retirement in January of 2009. In February of that year the Miami Heat announced they would be retiring Mourning’s jersey number 33. He is the only member of the Heat to have his jersey retired.
In 1997, the Alonzo Mourning Charities, Inc. was established. The charity aids in the development of children and families living in at-risk situations. In 2007, Mourning, along with many other famous athletes founded “Athletes for Hope” which encouraged professional athletes and non-athletes to become involved in charitable causes in their community.
