After almost drowning at the age of five, Cullen Jones learned to swim  and joined age-group swim clubs in West Orange and Newark, NJ.   In 2006, he won two gold medals in the Pan Pacific Championships, two gold and a silver medal in the World Championships, and a gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the 4X100m freestyle.  Cullen Jones is the first African-American to hold or share a world record in swimming which he set in the 4x100m freestyle relay in swimming.
