In 1993, Combs established the record label “Bad Boy Records” after being fired as an intern for Uptown Records.  He signed many rap and hip-hop artists like “Notorious B. I. G.”, “Dream”, and “Faith Evans”.  He formed his own production company called “The Hitmen” and produced albums for Lil’ Kim, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men and Aretha Franklin, among others.
In 1997, using the name “Puff Daddy”, Combs made his first commercial vocal as a rapper.  The debut single Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down was #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and his debut album, No Way Out won the Grammy Award in 1998 for best rap album.
Trying to reinvent himself after he was acquitted on a gun possession and bribary charge, Combs changed his stage name to P. Diddy in 2001 but ended up in court again facing assault charges.  During this period he signed “Dream” to his record label, and was an opening act of ‘N Sync on their Sprint 2002 Celebrity Tour.
Appearing on the “Today” show in 2005, Combs said that he was changing his stage name again by dropping the “P.” and just being “Diddy”.  Although best known as a rapper Combs can count record producer, actor, fashion designer, dancer and singer among his abilities.
